Letter to the library

Dear Wako University Umene Memorial Book and Information Centre,

In the fall of 2020, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Hananoi, who once taught French literature at Wako University, for scrutinizing the materials.

In the spring of 2021, I uploaded the result to my website under the title of "Professor Kasumi Hananoi and a small university on a hill".

After that, referring to the valuable teachings received from the people concerned, we revised a part of the content from the beginning of this year to make it the second edition, and this time we have uploaded it again.

The title is also intended to show the contents more comprehensively, "Encounter 1969-1986 in a small university on a hill" , and "Introduction to the 2nd edition" is newly added to this year. I have outlined . The new preface is reprinted below.

Introduction to the 2nd edition This recollection was published in the spring of 2021.After the publication, I received some warm letters. After reading them, I revised a part of the text this time. We would like to express our deep gratitude to you for your valuable opinions regarding this recollection.

In particular, the long letter I received from Dr K, who is a big senior in my high school and who was heading for age 88 this spring and is still studying history quietly , recommends even the finest details inside me. He weighed and congratulated me on what I wrote.

When I first started writing this recollection, my main focus was to write down my thoughts on a French scholar who had died while deepening his research and work at the university . But as I wrote, I learned that the death was wrapped in a lot of kindness that I couldn't imagine . These facts were described in detail in the texts and writings that touched on his life for the first time on this occasion .

After the first edition was published, this recollection was centred around a deceased French scholar, but he and his colleagues, as well as all gathered at a small university on a hilltop in the south of Tokyo.

I have come to think that it should be dedicated to the encounters between these people . Therefore, in this second edition, the title is "Encounter 1969-1986 at a small university on a hill".

It was made. The era shows the two periods when I was in college and the period when I was not enrolled in between .

Finally, everything that warmly understood my thoughts on writing this recollection, scrutinized and reported on the details of the facts half a century ago, and repeatedly encouraged me to continue writing. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to this person .

Wako University is now nearly 60 years old and has facilities, and it seems that it is no longer a "small university" at that time, but when I was enrolled at the end of the 1960s, I had tea in the laboratory. I couldn't prepare hot water for drinking, so I went to the water dispenser in the corner of the first floor of the research building, where the janitor poured me hot water. Eight years after I graduated, I reunited with a retired janitoron my way home from the Department of Humanities . The janitor also remembered my face and said nostalgically, "Please depend on my house next time, because it's on that hill."

Half a century ago, Wako was such a wonderful "small university". For that reason, we have added the year "1969-1986" to the title .
